Man protests by living in tree for more than 3 months

Mr Chen Maoguo, a Chongqing man over 60 years old, lived in a tree for 3 monthsfto protest the forced eviction from his land by the local government and land dealers.
Mr Chen’s home has about 1200 square meters of land, and there is a 220 thousand yuan ($32,000) difference in the settlement discussion between Mr Chen and the local government, but his home was pulled down by the construction company which is building a highway.
Unable to reach the government for further discussion, Mr Chen decided to live in the tree which was on his land, a 15 metre tall eucalyptus. Chen’s wife delivered his meals to him everyday by rope; all living necessities were transferred by rope, even excrement was passed down in plastic buckets by rope.

According to Shichuang Online, Chen and his wife, Shen Zhenglan owned a supermarket where they have been living for more than 30 years. They started with a brewing business and later opened a supermarket. They have worked hard and achieved well so far. The local government planned to give them 580 thousand yuan ($85,000) compensation, but Chen insists it should be at least 800 thousand yuan $(117,000), as their business and all their income is gone since this eviction. But Chen could not get his words across.
On 3rd of August 2009, Chen climbed onto his old tree to protest. On his living shelter, Chen displayed all his legal documents, trading certificate, tax granst and various quality checking certificates. Chen also set up a microphone on the tree. Every morning about 9am, his wife delivered baked potatos to him as breakfast, and Chen then broadcast through his microphone. Chen read excerpts from the Chinese constitution, legal legislation on private property issues, etc to the villagers.

Chen’s wife was very sad and said, “He hds to live there even in rainy and windy days. I had to pass the medication to him when he got cold up there…”
On 18th of November, after about 3 and a half months of Chen living in the tree, the local county communist party leader, Ren Zebing, who is also the vice director of the county development management committee, sent word to the family, that the construction company will be  responsible for fixing the money issue. So the family received a cheque for 800 thousand yuan from the construction company immediately.
Ren Zebing and the province party chairman (communist party), Luo Qihui promised the villagers, that Chen would not be arrested if he came down from the tree. They would also help to get Chen’s health checked. Chen came down from the tree after the settlement.
But the very evening that Chen came down from the tree, while he was having his first dinner with his family for months, 10 plainclothes people came to their home, and without showing any arrest warrant, without explanation, put Chen into a van and took him away.
The next day, Chen’s family received notice that Chen was detained by the province police bureau for disrupting public order.  Shichuang Online contacted province party leader, Luo Qihui, and asked about his promise, but Luo turn off his mobile phone after hearing the question.
